Zardari gambles with bold overtures to India

Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan’s president, has taken a big political gamble. At the weekend, he offered some of the strongest words of conciliation towards India of any Pakistani leader.

He dismissed the first use of nuclear weapons in a conflict and proposed the opening of the country’s markets to free trade with its much larger neighbour.
