France raises prospect of ban on burka

The French government was risking tensions with Muslim communities on Friday night after ministers said women could be banned from wearing the burka.

Luc Chatel, government spokesman, backed the idea of a parliamentary inquiry into whether the burka was in conflict with “republican principles”.
