Housing: US mortgage woes in a class of their own

The spectre of the behemoth US financial sector brought to its knees by bad home loans has focused the spotlight on the role of housing in economic activity.

It has raised the question of whether the housing market, which has proven such a destroyer of wealth in the US, has the potential to do so in other countries, particularly those which have also seen a boom in house prices in recent years.
