Motor parts suppliers: Slovakia finally begins to capitalise on car-making investment

Wolfgang Rohroff, purchasing director at Volkswagen Slovakia, once infamously remarked: “You can put all your Slovak suppliers in a bag, hit it with a stick, and be sure to hit the right one.”

His joke demonstrated VW’s frustration with the shortage of parts producers in Slovakia, which was forcing the German car maker to accept high logistic costs for importing components to its Bratislava plant.
