Accounting plan sparks strong debate

Lord Turner on Wednesday opened a fresh debate about banks’ accounting and the role regulators should play in it, sparking strong reactions from investors and the accounting community.

The FSA chairman proposed changing accounting to allow banks to build reserves better during the good times and said his staff would become far more engaged with the financial reporting of the banks they regulated. This would also involve far more regular discussions with auditors, Lord Turner said.
