Uphold the principles of financial services regulation

Groucho Marx said: "Those are my principles. If you don't like them I have others." With no irony intended, the Financial Services Authority and the financial services industry are in danger of saying similar things to each other.

In the last few years, financial regulation has moved from prescription and proscription to a situation in which principles, not rules, are the driving force. It is hard to overstate the importance of this historic progress.
