Steel Partners, the US hedge fund run by Warren Lichtenstein, on Tuesday lost its final court appeal against a “poison pill” defence by Bull-Dog Sauce, the Japanese condiments maker it has been trying to take over since May.

The Supreme Court decision effectively ends Steel Partners’ ¥32bn ($270m) hostile bid for Bull-Dog, maker of a popular brand of Worcester-style sauce.
