Sterling suffers short, sharp drop

The pound fell sharply to erase early gains on Thursday as rumours circulated that Gordon Brown, UK prime minister, had resigned.

The pound dropped almost three cents against the dollar in a matter of minutes, plunging from $1.6378 to a low of $1.6086 as the speculation took hold.
