Pro-trade Democrat in line for commerce post

The likely appointment of Gary Locke, the former governor of Washington state, as US commerce secretary could finally provide the high-profile voice on trade and business that has so far been lacking in Barack Obama’s administration.

Mr Locke’s probable nomination, floated by officials this week, follows the withdrawal of the first two candidates, Bill Richardson, the New Mexico governor, and Judd Gregg, a Republican senator for New Hampshire.
