Bush plan to beef up border patrols under fire

President George W. Bush faced strong criticism on Monday over a plan to deploy National Guard troops to patrol the US border with Mexico.

The move, which Mr Bush was expected to announce in a nationally televised address late on Monday night, is aimed at appeasing critics who say the administration has done too little to stem the flow of illegal immigrants into the US.
