Europe urged to promote generic drugs

The failure to promote more cost effective and widespread prescription of generic medicines is costing European taxpayers billions of euros a year, according to a new study submitted to the European Commission.

Health insurers could have saved more than $3bn in 2004 alone through greater use of generic medicines at lower prices, says the research co-ordinated by Panos Kanavos at the London School of Economics (LSE).
