The world’s first successful cloning of a camel in Dubai this month will provide a springboard for producing faster animals for money-spinning races across the Gulf.
A female calf, named Injaz or “Achievement” by scientists, was born on April 8 and is the clone of a camel slaughtered for meat in 2005, using DNA extracted from the animal’s ovaries. Injaz is the result of six years’ work by scientists at the Camel Reproduction Centre and the Central Veterinary Research Laboratory in Dubai.
