The 40th anniversary of the start of the Cultural Revolution passed without ceremony last month in China, where the authorities continue to suppress memories of the decade of ultra-leftist turmoil.

But the legacy of the war waged against capitalist thinking is all too evident in one unlikely quarter: the accountancy profession.
