UK backlash over mortgage fraud probe

The sharpening police focus on mortgage fraud has caused a rift with the private sector, highlighting the lack of precise information about the extent of crime in the market.

The City of London police force has outlined plans to deploy 50 new investigators solely on mortgage scams, while the lending industry has derided recent research by police chiefs estimating the extent of mortgage fraud at £700m ($1.4bn) a year.
