Japan’s students choose modest jobs

That the global recession has hit Japan’s build-for-export manufacturers hard is no secret. In a country dependent on foreign demand, shipments are running at just over half their levels of a year ago.

This month, Toyota, king of Japan’s export castle, revealed its first loss in six decades. Sony – formerly the handsome prince – is shrinking its workforce by 16,000.
