Maverick brilliance makes Miller talk of the slopes

When is a team-mate not a team-mate? When the man in question is Bode Miller, winner of the past two downhill races in the Alpine Skiing World Cup.

The American is a special skier. Two Olympic silver medals in 2002 and overall World Cup champion in 2005, when he also became the first man since 1989 to win in all five disciplines - downhill, slalom, giant slalom, super-G and super combination - in one season, testify to his brilliance. But his "specialness" accompanies a fiercely independent personality, that some of his compatriots find hard to handle.
