Contracts awarded for ID cards and passports

The home secretary on Tuesday awarded contracts to CSC and IBM, the computer companies, to provide the new biometric passports and identity cards despite uncertainty over the contentious programme’s future.

Jacqui Smith decided to press ahead with the contracts in the face of Conservative calls to scrap the scheme and doubts about whether the government was committed to rolling out ID cards nationwide.
