Alistair Darling: Debut on the world stage

Alisdair DarlingAlistair Darling has big shoes to fill as he goes to Washington for his first annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank as the new UK chancellor.

His predecessor, Gordon Brown, now British prime minister, was a fixture on the scene as his counterparts came and went every few years and he chaired and dominated the International Monetary and Financial Committee, the IMF’s governing body.
