The demise of Whittard of Chelsea, on Tuesday and its almost instant re-emergence from administration in the hands of Epic, is a familiar tale. A niche retailer with a clever idea that fares well during a boom, only to find its shortcomings exposed when consumer confidence wanes .
It echoes cases such as Sock Shop, which collapsed into administration in February 1990 as the late 1980s retail boom turned to bust.
