An unprecedented rise in demand for euro banknotes outside the eurozone could cause problems for borrowers and lenders in eastern Europe, the European Central Bank warned on Wednesday.

The ECB said businesses and households outside the eurozone had continued to take out loans in euros in spite of the financial crisis, in the hope of taking advantage of lower interest rates.
