Turkey's pace of growth quickens

Turkey's economy grew faster than expected in the first quarter, presenting the outgoing government with a boost for its economic campaign ahead of a general election on July 22.

Gross domestic product rose 6.8 per cent in the three months to March, the official statistics office said. This compared with 5.2 per cent in the same period in 2006 and a market consensus of 5 per cent.
