Can do better in the social mobility class

For much of this decade, the Labour government has beaten itself up over Britain’s lack of social mobility. On Monday, by contrast, it came close to a premature claim that things are improving.

A report from the prime minister’s strategy unit seized on findings that family background seemed to have become less significant in determining children’s GCSE performance, prompting a minister to claim there were “signs of good news”. Well, maybe.
