Brokers turn to the hard sell to survive

Mortgage brokers are laying off staff, giving the hard sell on insurance products and cold-calling past clients as they battle to survive a slowdown in housing transactions and the drying up of credit.

Business volumes have plummeted in recent months – in some cases by half – as brokers struggle to find lenders willing to accommodate clients. Lenders are also offering better deals directly to clients rather than through intermediaries.
