Operators to unwrap 3G mobiles in time for Christmas service

Mobile operators are getting ready for a 3G Christmas. After years of delays and controversy, the new phones are at last coming on the market, and there are signs that customers are finally starting to be wooed by the technology.

The operators spent £22.5bn buying 3G licences in 2000 at the height of the telecommunications boom. By the time networks are fully built, they will have spent several billions more.
