The number of mainland Chinese visitors to Macao fell by 16.5 per cent last month after neighbouring Guangdong province brought in visa restrictions in May.
The flow of mainland Chinese gamblers into Macao traditionally drops off after May, when there is a week-long national holiday, but in the past few years that decline had been only 9 per cent. Overall visitor numbers in June were still up 20 per cent against last year.
