Taiwan rally urges weapons deal with US

Several thousand supporters of Taiwan independence took to the streets of the island's capital yesterday demanding parliament approve a multi-billion dollar arms procurement package seen as vital to securing the island's defence ties with the US.

The demonstration marks the first time Taiwan's ruling party and its allies have held a public rally in support of the arms package that, in spite of its significance for security, is unpopular on the island.
