Troubled Ambac keen to split

Ambac, the bond insurer, is seeking to raise capital to support a split of its operations in an attempt to avoid a sharp cut in its credit rating.

It wants to separate its municipal bond guarantee business, its traditional core, from its riskier structured finance operations, which have been hit hard by their exposure to securities backed by subprime mortgages.
