Carphone Warehouse has confirmed plans for a demerger of its retail and telecommunications interests, saying it might be possible to execute the break-up either late this year or early in 2010.

The group said it would create separately listed companies for its retail and telecoms interests, with Charles Dunstone, chief executive, becoming chairman of the two new entities.
