British forces on Tuesday handed over control of their base in Basra to the US military, symbolically completing Britain’s withdrawal from Iraq six years after the US-led invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein’s regime.

“We have shed blood together and that is a bond that no man can break,” General Raymond Odierno, the senior US military commander in Iraq told British and Iraqi officials. “You have restored hope where chaos reigned.”
