ECB seeks wider policing role

The European Central Bank could be given significant extra powers as part of measures to boost eurozone bank supervision, its vice-president has proposed, in the clearest signal yet that the bank believes a re-think of regulation is urgently needed.

Lucas Papademos said the ECB could take responsibility for policing large banks operating across borders in the 16-country eurozone, working in conjunction with national central banks.
