Bruised board changes tack to welcome Mack

John Mack would have been the clear favourite in the race to succeed Philip Purcell from the start but for one small detail - he was not allowed to run.

In one of the most bizarre twists in the extraordinary saga of the last three months, the board publicly ruled out Mr Mack when Mr Purcell announced he was stepping down.
