Eurozone: Leaders lose some of their swagger

If the world’s economic policymakers had gathered in Washington a few months ago, European representatives would have been feeling pretty pleased with themselves.

Until the global credit squeeze, the eurozone economy was purring perfectly – with growth buoyant, unemployment tumbling and inflation firmly under control. For four quarters, eurozone gross domestic product growth had outpaced that of the US.
