Muted welcome in Asia for EU appointments

News of the appointments of Herman Van Rompuy and Baroness Ashton received a polite but muted response in Asia, where the European Union is widely regarded as well-meaning but undynamic.

Wen Jiabao, the Chinese prime minister, told European diplomats at a function in Beijing that the appointments were “another important step forward” for EU integration.
