A pair of sandals abandoned on the blood-splattered floor of Ngwe Kyar Yan monastery in Rangoon is among the powerful images to have come out of Burma during the protests of recent days.

The picture was posted on the Thailand-based Irrawaddy website, one of the overseas Burmese information outlets that have kept the world abreast of the dramatic events unfolding in secretive Burma.
