The environmental initiatives to be announced this week by the European Commission, its most ambitious green agenda to date, will firmly turn carbon emissions into a mainstream commodity.

This is the bet being placed by the transatlantic NYSE-Euronext stock exchange, together with France’s Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, which jointly launched their international environmental exchange operating markets in carbon emission allowances and credits on Tuesday.
