Hapag-Lloyd has become the first container shipping line to receive direct state aid in this downturn after the German government agreed to guarantee €1.2bn ($1.7bn) in loans for the Hamburg-based company.

As part of the complex financing deal, announced on Thursday, Hapag-Lloyd’s shareholders will inject a further €750m into the sixth-largest container ship operator.
