EU backs Iran offer with new sanction threat

The European Union will impose new financial sanctions on Iran in the next few weeks if Tehran fails to respond positively to a fresh offer from the big world powers regarding its nuclear ambitions.

After a visit to Iran at the weekend by Javier Solana, the EU foreign policy chief, Tehran is considering the offer, under which it would receive a wide range of economic and political support if it suspends uranium enrichment.
