HSBC's appointment of Mexico's former finance minister just weeks after he quit office has stirred up controversy, with politicians in the country insisting the hiring is in breach of usual rules.

Jose Francisco Gil Diaz was secretary of finance and public credit in Mexico until November 30. He joined HSBC as a non-executive director last week.
