Merkel seeks party backing before coalition

Angela Merkel, the conservative challenger for the German chancellorship, faces the first hurdle in her attempt to form a new government on Tuesday when she stands for re-election as CDU/CSU leader in the Bundestag.

She faces no real opposition to her position but anything less than total support from her MPs would be seen as a weakening of her position as she tries to put together a working coalition.
