It is early days in the relationship between Nippon Sheet Glass and Pilkington, and decisions over how the enlarged group will pursue research and development have yet to be made.

But NSG is buying a business whose history is dominated by its invention of a revolutionary way of making glass in the 1950s, and which has continued a proud tradition of technical innovation ever since.
