London skyline: Debate builds over plans

Until recently, the skyline of London was defined primarily by St Paul’s to the east and the Houses of Parliament to the west.

That changed dramatically in 2003 with the arrival of the “Erotic Gherkin”, headquarters of insurance giant Swiss Re, a bold glass-and-steel structure that has become an icon; not just of the City of London but the entire capital.
