End to Belgian political crisis in sight

An eight-month-old political crisis in Belgium, one of Europe’s most decentralised states, appeared close to an end on Monday with a compromise under which even more self-rule would be offered to the country’s regions.

After negotiations lasting into the early hours of Monday morning, a committee of Belgian elder statesmen struck an agreement that foresees the transfer of various powers over industrial policy, housing and agriculture.
