Turkish army condemns media claims

Turkey’s military chief lashed out at the media on Wednesday after a newspaper published leaked documents and claimed army failings had contributed to the deaths of 17 soldiers in a clash with Kurdish rebels.

The competence of Turkey’s military is rarely challenged. Its influence in politics – intervening four times in 50 years to oust elected leaders – is founded on a widespread belief that it is a guarantor of public order.
