Award speaks to promise of making world safer

Critics might have derided the speed of President Barack Obama’s surprise Nobel peace prize, but for his admirers around the world looking for a new era of US multilateralism, the commendation was prophetic rather than premature.

From South Africa to Israel to France, world leaders congratulated Mr Obama on becoming only the third sitting US president to win the coveted prize.
