Financial markets leave Fed little room to move

The Federal Reserve is widely expected to keep US interest rates unchanged at 2 per cent at its monthly meeting on Tuesday as financial markets remain mired in the strains caused by the credit crunch.

Inflation data provide the backbone for this week’s releases amid mounting hopes that the recent fall in oil prices should eventually allow inflationary pressures to ease and interest rates to fall on both sides of the Atlantic.
