US FDA demands action over food labelling

The US Food and Drug Administration has warned the food industry to standardise the proliferation of symbols and ratings used to highlight nutritional claims on the front of food packages – or else face government action.

Dr Margaret Hamburg, FDA commissioner, said consumers encountered a “cacophony” of front-of-package claims, creating “confusion rather than clarity”, while the country faced rising obesity levels.
