State resources tested as fires reach Athens

Strong winds fanned a huge wildfire that tore through many homes and thousands of acres of forest near the Greek capital, forcing thousands to flee and putting more pressure on the government ahead of next year’s election.

Thick smoke hung over the Acropolis in Athens as the flames, raging unchecked for a second day, reached the city’s northern suburbs, testing state resources and the conservative government, which is trailing the opposition in the opinion polls.
