Transport: Public networks face test in land where the car is king

At most international airports, a visitor can jump on a bus or train and go cheaply and safely to their destination. It does not work that way in South Africa, however. In a country where crime remains the major concern and public transport has long been seen as the domain of the poor, private car remains the means of choice for people who can afford it.

Even then, visitors to next year’s Fifa soccer World Cup need to be careful, Chris Bryant, UK foreign office minister, said last week. “It is crucial that those planning to travel are aware of what measures to take to stay safe,” Mr Bryant said.
