Carter claims racism fires hostility to reform

Barack Obama’s race has become a political issue, with Jimmy Carter, the former president, alleging that much of the increasingly bitter opposition to the administration is motivated by racism.

Tensions have risen as healthcare reform has gathered momentum. Accusations that the hostility to Mr Obama’s plans has a racial overtone gained traction when Mr Carter said “an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity” toward Mr Obama was due to the fact he is African-American.
