I t was fortunate that the United Auto Workers strike in late September at General Motors lasted only two days – not just for the carmaker but for those US television viewers tiring of the presidential primary campaigns.
Given the chance, Democratic candidates would have been elbowing each other aside for photo opportunities on the picket lines in Detroit. All pledged their support for the striking workers and were planning visits. In the event, only former senator John Edwards got there in time.
